Sermon Notes from Monday Night's Online Service If you missed or would like a copy of Monday Nights Online Service you can find the notes from the service on this page. Updated every Monday evening. Walk in the Spirit Preached by: April Hunt October 27th, 2008
Key Scripture: "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16, KJV) Introduction Paul wrote to the Galatian Christians to encourage them to make a proper response to the Holy Spirit that they might not live on the level of their lower nature. He informed them of the struggle that would continue between the Spirit of God, who came into their hearts at the time of conversion, and the lower nature with its sinful appetites Galatians. 5:17 – 21(NLT) 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. 18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. 19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. It was his earnest desire that they experience the full harvest of the fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5: 22-24 (NLT) But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
That they might be assured of such, he encouraged them to "walk in the Spirit."
I. To walk implies progress. It is not the will of God that we remain as we are or where we are. God would have us to walk forward toward maturity and fruitfulness. Walking also implies that we are moving in a forward direction. You've never heard of anyone "walking" when they are standing still, right? In order to walk we need to actually be moving in a forward direction. Step by step, we move! That is what God expects from us. We must "walk". Never stand still! II. To walk implies direction. God would not have us to go backward from our task and our opportunities. Neither would he have us to walk in aimless circles. By his Spirit he would lead us in the paths of righteousness and fruitfulness as he led Paul. We read how the Holy Spirit guided his walk: "Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia, after they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas" Acts 16:6 – 8 (NLT) 6 Next Paul and Silas traveled through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time. 7 Then coming to the borders of Mysia, they headed north for the province of Bithynia,[a] but again the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to go there. 8 So instead, they went on through Mysia to the seaport of Troas. The Holy Spirit will guide our walk in a similar manner if we are sensitive and responsive to his leadership. III. Walking in the Spirit. There are at least five ways in which we know the Spirit wants us to walk. We can count on Him to assist us in every way possible. A.The Holy Spirit will help us to walk worthy of our Christian calling Ephesians 4:1 (NLT) Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.
B.The Spirit will help us to walk differently from the unsaved Ephesians 4: 17 (NLT) With the Lord's authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. C. The Spirit will help us to walk in love Ephesians 5:2 (NLT) Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us[a] and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. D. The Spirit will help us to walk as the children of light Ephesians 5:8 (NLT) For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! E. The Spirit will help us to walk in wisdom Ephesians 5:15 (NLT) So be careful how you live. Don't live like fools, but like those who are wise. Conclusion The Holy Spirit dwells in the heart of the believer. He is as close to you as your breath. By faith recognize His presence. Respond to His leadership, and walk forward into the future with courage and cheer, for God has wonderful things in store for you if you seek to "walk in the Spirit."

Today's Scripture *October 31, 2008* Psalm 25: 14 The Lord is a friend to those who fear him. He teaches them his covenant. "The LORD is a friend to those who fear him". God offers intimate and lasting friendship to those who revere Him, who hold Him in highest honor. What relationship could ever compare with having the Lord of all creation for a friend? Your everlasting friendship with God will grow as you respect and honor Him. Father God, as most the known world celebrates and participates this day in the pagan holiday of Halloween, we ask that we would be set apart and shine brightly for You in a dark world. May we long to have an eternal friendship with You and work out our salvation with fear and trembling. We love You Lord! We long to be Your children! Your friends! May we rejoice in knowing that we are friends of God! In Your Name, Amen.. Bless You as You shine brightly for God!
